Maria Sharapova thanks fans as drug scandal envelops her life
Disgraced tennis star Maria Sharapova has made her first public comment since revealing her failed drug test, taking the opportunity to thank fans for their support and note she hadn't been online much other than to "search for an antique coffee table".
Sharapova announced this week that she tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open, soon after the drug was put on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list on January 1.
There has been shock reaction to the multiple grand slam winner's announcement with many top tennis stars rallying to her side noting her "courage" in fronting up while others have condemned the act. She faces a lengthy ban from the sport, to be announced this weekend.
